- The University of Ibadan (UI) has been named the best university in Nigeria in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, taking back the top spot from Covenant University. Both UI and UNILAG fall in the global range of 801-1000, followed by Bayero University Kano, Covenant and Landmark University.

The University of Ibadan (UI) has regained its position as the best university in Nigeria, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026.
UI last held the top spot in 2023 and by 2025 it moved from fourth place to ahead of 50 other Nigerian institutions.
It currently sits in the global 801-1000 range, ahead of University of Lagos (UNILAG), Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Covenant University which are ranked second, third and fourth respectively.
The 2026 rankings evaluated 2,191 universities from 115 countries using 18 indicators covering teaching, research, industry and international outlook.
Among Nigerian institutions, UNILAG scored highest for research quality, BUK led for international exposure, and Covenant University topped the list for industry engagement.
