Nigerian government removes mathematics as compulsory subject for arts students

Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education has announced that mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for arts and humanities students seeking admission to universities and polytechnics. In accordance with revised national guidance on entry requirements for Nigeria

In higher education institutions, students in arts and social sciences are only required to obtain credit in English language, while mathematics is compulsory in science, technology and social science courses.

The revised guidelines state that universities will require at least five credits in relevant subjects, including English language, and passes in no more than two examinations. Mathematics is a compulsory subject in science, technology and social science courses. For polytechnics, the requirements are different: for ND level, four credits in relevant subjects including English for non-science courses and Mathematics for science-related courses; for HND level, five credits in relevant subjects including English and Mathematics. The Faculty of Education will require four credits in relevant subjects, with English as compulsory for arts and social science courses and mathematics as compulsory for science, vocational and technical courses.

This reform aims to remove barriers and improve access to higher education for more students.
