- The Senate on Thursday confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His confirmation came after a screening, during which he answered several questions from lawmakers before being asked to take a bow. After his withdrawal, a motion moved by Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele to restore the seat’s privileges was passed. Senate President Godswill Akpabio then took a voice vote on Ampitan’s nomination, which was unanimous, formally confirming his appointment.

The Senate has officially confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He was confirmed Thursday after a screening meeting of the Senate Committee of the Whole on the Senate floor.
During the exercise, MPs asked several questions, which Amupitan answered before being allowed to bow and leave the chamber. He left promising to communicate the Senate’s decision to him.
Following his exit, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion to restore all speaking rights that had been suspended earlier during the screening. The motion was seconded by the minority leader and passed by voice vote.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio then put the nomination to another voice vote where it was passed unanimously.
“The nomination of Josh Ojo Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission is hereby confirmed,” Akpabio declared.
