- A Nigerian man has sparked a heated debate online by advising Nigerians abroad to stop spending money to build homes in the country.
- He urged them to focus on improving the comfort of their living environment, noting that many such houses end up abandoned and vacant, as his father’s experience shows.

A Nigerian man has sparked heated debate online after using his father’s experience as a warning to Nigerians abroad to stop wasting money building houses at home.
In a viral post shared by @joebrendan on X, he urged people in the UK, US or Canada to prioritize comfort where they live rather than pursuing cultural identity.
“If you have moved to the UK, US or Canada and dream of raising a family there, stop the habit of buying houses in Abuja and Lagos unless you are buying the house as an investment to sell later,” he wrote.
He believes that many Nigerians abroad sacrifice their comfort to build houses that they rarely use.
“Put all your money into buying a house in the country you live in. There is an 80 percent chance that your children will not come back and stay in Nigeria. So all the house you accumulate here, at the expense of their comfort there, will be wasted.” he warned.
Sharing his father’s story, he added:
“My father built a very big house in the village; the house is empty today. None of his children want it. He doesn’t even want it anymore himself. It was a complete waste of money.”
He summed it up in blunt terms:
“The house you build in your hometown, you live in it maybe two weeks a year. Invest more money in where you live and make yourself more comfortable. Life is for living. Stop doing things because it’s tradition or culture.”
