    • Aloy Ejimakor, lawyer to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, was teargassed by police during a peaceful protest in Abuja on Monday.
    • Demonstrators gathered for the #MNKOct20 rally to demand Kanu’s release.
    • Ejimacol said tear gas irritated his eyes and throat and described the crowd as “huge” before police dispersed it.

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead lawyer for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has sounded the alarm on Monday after he was teargassed by police during a peaceful protest in Abuja.

Ejimakor, who joined other demonstrators calling for Kanu’s release, said police fired tear gas to disperse a large crowd that gathered in front of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel for the #MNKOct20 rally.

According to him, the incident caused severe irritation to his eyes and throat.

He wrote on X: “I was in front of the Transcorp Hilton and a huge crowd had gathered around me for #MNKOct20 and the police had just set off tear gas. My eyes and throat hurt. They were scattered everywhere. “

The protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, was organized to demand that the federal government comply with a previous court order directing the federal government to release Kanu, who has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021.

The incident sparked outrage among supporters, who described the police action as another attempt to suppress Kanu’s liberal and peaceful advocacy.
