Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has appointed his nephew, Afrobeat star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the Chairman of Osun Sports Trust.
The news was announced by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit to the Osun State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
Adeus said the move was part of efforts to reposition sports in Osun and establish a sustainable financing model through private and public partnerships. He added that the state was “in the advanced stages of establishing the Osun State Sports Commission” which would oversee development, management and policy implementation.
“The launch of the Sports Trust will attract support from domestic and international sports philanthropists to ensure sustainable sports financing and development,” Adeus said.
He disclosed that Davido accepted the appointment “without hesitation” and expressed his willingness to contribute to the development of sports in the state.
Adeus said the government believed Davido’s “global profile and network will bring visibility and attract significant funding to Osun’s sports ecosystem”.
He also assured that “the ongoing renovation and restoration work at the Osogbo Town Stadium will be completed in the shortest possible time” with the aim of making it a “world-class sports venue capable of hosting national and international events”.
The appointment drew mixed reactions as Governor Adeleke continues to appoint family members to key positions. In 2023, he appointed another nephew, Tunji Adeleke, as Chairman of the Local Government Council.
