Nollywood actor, Williams Uchemba has urged the Nigerian government to implement public executions of individuals found guilty of kidnapping, arguing that strong and visible punishment is necessary to curb the rising rate of kidnapping in the country.
Sharing his views in a video posted on Instagram, Uchenba expressed disappointment at the government’s failure to fully implement existing death penalty laws. He believes that without serious consequences, the kidnappers will continue to operate without fear.
The actor drew comparisons to China, noting that the Asian country enforces the death penalty for crimes such as kidnapping and corruption, a policy he believes plays a major role in keeping the country’s crime rate low.
“The law already provides for the death penalty for kidnapping, but most of the time when these criminals are caught we don’t hear anything about their fate,” he said.
“In fact, I think there should be a specific TV channel to show the arrests and public executions of convicted kidnappers. Until strict and visible penalties are imposed, the situation will remain the same,” Uchenba insisted.
His comments come amid a rise in kidnapping cases across Nigeria, especially ahead of the festive season, a period usually known for rampant criminal activity.
Uchemba called on authorities to take stronger action, stressing that clear enforcement of justice would not only deter criminals but also help restore citizens’ confidence in security systems.
