    • A man has sparked outrage online after suggesting parents should not allow children with special needs to live.
    • His disturbing comments drew widespread condemnation from Nigerians, with many calling them callous and discriminatory.
    • Disability advocates and human rights groups are calling for greater public education and tougher action against hate speech against people with disabilities.

    A social media user sparked outrage after posting an insensitive statement suggesting parents should not allow children with special needs to live.

    The man, whose identity has not been made public, made the comments during an online discussion about parenting and disability. His comments drew immediate and widespread condemnation from Nigerians, who described them as callous, ignorant and dangerous.

    Many users stressed that every child deserves to be loved, cared for and protected regardless of their physical or mental condition.

    See some of the reactions behind the post below:

    @iamAbode
    What a cruel and ignorant statement.
    Children with special needs are still human beings with feelings, potential, and a right to life.
    Many of them grow up to do amazing things and bring joy to those around them.

    @felixwise
    Careless talk stems from his ignorance. Children with special needs should be protected from such people. If you’ve ever worked in a hospital for special needs children, you’ll appreciate the work that goes into it, from speech therapy to occupational therapy to physical therapy and more

    @KhizXL
    They care for such children as if they will live forever, when in fact… no miracles will happen. “Serious special needs.”

    @KhizXL
    He was telling the hard truth.

    @Fillipo_Saga
    As a parent, this is extremely difficult to do, but when you really sit down and think about

    @FavritEngr
    I hope he won’t regret this later?

    @Osemujiamhen
    Omo…who is this?
