Nigerian pop star Lojay Lekan Osifeso has opened up about the struggles he faced in his early days in the music industry and the moments when he doubted himself.
In an interview with Punch, the Mona Lisa star revealed that there were times when he almost gave up on music altogether.
He said, “I’ve had moments where I almost gave up on music. There were nights when I doubted anyone would hear my songs. But those silent years shaped me; they taught me patience, resilience, and gratitude for everyone who listens to me today.”
Roger also talked about how he deals with the pressures and expectations that come with fame, noting that he often retreats from the public eye to focus on what matters most.
He said, “Family, faith and silence. Sometimes I disappear for a while, no music, no social media. Just time to breathe and reconnect with God and my people. That’s how I remember who I am outside of the hustle and bustle.”
The singer reflects on his hit “Mona Lisa” and its remix with Chris Brown, sharing how the collaboration highlighted the music’s universal appeal.
He emphasized, “It showed me that music really has no boundaries. Chris came to his company with full respect for this record, he understood it, felt it and elevated it. It made me realize that authenticity goes further than trying to sound ‘international’.”
When talking about the timing of his debut album XOXO, Roger explained that he wanted to take the time to create something meaningful.
He added, “I didn’t want to drop an album just to say I gave up. I wanted to experience enough emotion first to infuse the album with authenticity. Every song on XOXO comes from a real place and it took me time to find that honesty.”
