Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmed has criticized recent statements by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz targeting individuals allegedly involved in the imposition of Sharia law in northern Nigeria.
Senator Cruz had earlier vowed that the United States would impose sanctions on those who carry out Sharia punishments, saying such actions violated human rights. His comments came in response to reports of harsh judicial rulings based on Sharia law in parts of northern Nigeria.
Ahmed responded through his official X account on Friday, November 1, 2025, condemning Cruz’s stance, accusing him of overstepping his authority by trying to dominate Nigeria’s internal legal affairs.
“So a U.S. senator is now proud to announce that they will target those who help enforce Sharia law in Nigeria as if practicing or supporting Sharia law is a crime,” Ahmed wrote. “You are free to oppose Sharia law in your own country, but you do not have the jurisdiction to determine our laws. We will defend our sovereignty and right to determine our own legal matters.”
Ahmed’s response sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many Nigerians divided over Cruz’s remarks. While some supported holding senators accountable for alleged human rights violations, others agreed with Ahmed, insisting that Sharia law remains the constitutional and legal system in several Nigerian states.
