Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmed Gumi has called on President Bola Tinubu to take firm diplomatic action against former US President Donald Trump’s recent threats to take military action against Nigeria.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page on Sunday, Gumi called Trump’s remarks a direct insult to Nigeria’s sovereignty. He urged the government to respond quickly and decisively.
“Trump’s threat to a sovereign nation with military attack is a profound disrespect for our authority, but we can rise above it,” Gumi wrote.
He suggested that the federal government summon the US ambassador to Nigeria and demand a formal retraction of the statement. According to him, Nigeria will consider severing diplomatic ties if it fails to receive a report.
“President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; either they retract their threats or we sever diplomatic relations with this irresponsible regime,” he added.
Gumi also stressed that Nigeria has alternative economic and military partnerships, saying the country should not feel dependent on any single foreign power for its development and security.
