In other news… Luqman says the ‘Afrobeat’ label for Nigerian music may not last long.
“I have a feeling that the whole Afrobeat label might disappear soon,” he said.
The rapper, whose real name is Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, shared his thoughts on TV channel Rubbin’ Minds on Sunday.
While he expresses pride in the global recognition of Nigerian music, he admits that he finds the quality of the current repertoire to be unappealing.
“The only thing I’m not too excited about is the quality of the music; there aren’t many people making stuff that I really respect,” Lugman pointed out.
Although the terms “Afrobeat” and “Afrobeats” are often used interchangeably, some consider them to be different: Afrobeat, pioneered by Fela Kuti, is a revolutionary instrumental genre, while Afrobeat refers to contemporary, commercially oriented African pop music.
