OpenAI has tightened restrictions on ChatGPT, prohibiting it from providing personal medical, legal or financial advice. Once viewed as the go-to tool for problem-solving, chatbots are now classified as “educational tools” that explain general ideas rather than provide specific advice. NEXTA said the decision stemmed from regulatory pressure and concerns about legal liability, as tech companies try to avoid liability for harmful or misleading advice.
Under the new guidance, ChatGPT can outline general concepts but will no longer provide drug names, dosages, draft legal documents or investment advice. The purpose is to prevent users from mistaking their responses for expert guidance. Many people previously relied on it as a “virtual doctor” or online therapist, often leading to unnecessary worry or emotional dependence. However, AI cannot examine patients, detect distress, or replace professional judgment.
The same applies to legal and financial matters. ChatGPT can define terms like 401(k) or contract terms, but it can’t review individual cases or ensure legal accuracy. Privacy concerns also play a role, as sharing sensitive details such as health data or banking information with AI systems could put users at risk.
This policy shift protects both users and OpenAI: users are protected from misinformation, professionals retain control over their areas of expertise, and the company reduces the risk of lawsuits. This update reinforces a key principle – AI can educate, but human experts must provide the advice.
