    • He died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada.
    • Akiin Shuga is the founder and leader of Shuga Band.

Nigerian music legend and bandleader Akinloye Tofowomo popularly known as Akiin Shuga has passed away, his family has confirmed.

The founder and driving force behind Shuga Band passed away in New Brunswick, Canada on October 30, 2025 at the age of 50. In a heartfelt statement released Monday, his family celebrated his life and musical contributions.

“Akinloye Tofowomo was more than just a musician; he embodied the essence of rhythm, culture and performance.” the family said. They describe him as a trailblazer whose influence on Nigerian live music spanned generations.

The statement highlighted his more than three decades of musical achievement and praised his leadership style that combined skill, grace and purpose. “He was a pillar of inspiration and excellence to fans in Nigeria and abroad, a true master of his craft,” the family added.

They asked for privacy during their mourning and promised to share details of the memorial service later. “We ask for quiet reflection as we navigate this profound loss,” the statement read.

They also thanked friends, colleagues and fans for their condolences. “We are deeply grateful to all who have offered prayers, tributes and support. The legacy Akinloye Tofowomo leaves behind through Shuga Band and Shuga Entertainment will live on forever.” family members pointed out.

Born on January 6, 1975 in Il-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga’s journey has been one of resilience. Suffering from polio at the age of five, he overcame significant physical challenges to become one of Nigeria’s best-known live performers and entertainment entrepreneurs.

His musical career officially began in 1998 with the formation of Shuga Band, which performed for the first time at Pintos, Ikeja, Lagos. The band eventually grew into a 14-member group known for its energetic performances at weddings, corporate events and official functions.

Through Shuga Entertainment, he has built a brand known for professionalism, sophistication and artistic excellence. Under his leadership, Shuga Band has set new standards for the Nigerian live music scene, creatively blending genres and elevating the quality of entertainment at various events.

Akiin Shuga also serves as the founding president of the Association of Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), advocating for fair treatment, improved welfare and professionalism for musicians across the country.

Tributes are pouring in from across the entertainment industry, celebrating his ability to inspire, guide and bring joy through music.

From defeating polio to becoming a symbol of perseverance and creativity, Akiin Shuga’s story is one of triumph. His Shuga band remains an enduring testament to his vision, passion and dedication to music.

As his family so eloquently put it: “Akinloye Tofowomo’s rhythm may be over, but his music will always live on.”
