Nigerian artist Oludipe David, better known by his stage name Spyro, has expressed concern over the declining quality of contemporary music.
Sparrow was an advocate for music to convey meaningful messages, and he believed that the erosion of thoughtful music played a role in society’s moral decay.
During an appearance on Adesope Live, he said: “Before, artists conveyed important messages through their music, regardless of genre. Today, it feels like it’s all about the vibe, we just enjoy the beats, there’s no substance.”
“As cool as resonance is, I feel like music has lost its intrinsic value. Back then, you got goosebumps listening to music. Resonance is cool. But how do we inject messages, values, into resonance?
“A lot of the decadence in our society today can be traced to the fact that music has lost its value. We just sing for the money now. A lot of us got into this industry for the money, not to make an impact.”
