Federal High Court sentences IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment

Federal High Court sentences IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment

After a ten-year trial, Federal High Court Judge James Omotosho has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment.

Judge Omotosho handed down the sentence on Thursday, four years after Kanu was arrested in Kenya under controversial circumstances and brought back to Nigeria.

He was subsequently charged with seven counts bordering on terrorism.

The verdict was handed down in Kanu’s absence as the IPOB leader insisted there would be no sentencing on terrorism charges brought against him by the federal government.

As a result of the drama that followed, the presiding judge ordered security personnel to remove him from the court, citing “unruly behaviour”.

Omotosho said Kanu’s multiple broadcasts through Radio Biafra amounted to acts of terrorism, adding that his words and intentions were based on violence.

The judge also claimed that Kanu’s stay-at-home order in southeastern states amounted to terrorism, stressing that the order violated the freedom of movement of people in the southeast.

Justice Omotosho maintained that IPOB leaders lacked the constitutional power to order people to sit at home.

Judge Motosho said that from the evidence in court, Kanu committed preparatory terrorism by ordering the killing of police officers and military officers over the radio.

The court said the IPOB leader was found guilty of acts of terrorism against the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
