The National Universities Commission has expressed concern over the increasing misuse of honorary doctorates by universities and non-accredited institutions across Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, disclosed this in Abuja on Friday while presenting the findings of an investigation into “the award and public misuse of honorary doctorates”.
Ribadu said the investigation, which covered 61 institutions and professional bodies, revealed “deeply worrying” practices, including the indiscriminate awarding of honorary degrees and even bogus professorships.
NUC bosses have warned recipients of honorary doctorates from using the title “Doctor” in their names, stressing that such titles were reserved for PhD or medical degree holders.
