The House of Representatives has urged the federal government to deploy all diplomatic channels to ensure the immediate and safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who was stranded in Guinea-Bissau following the military coup.
The resolution came after House Leader Julius Ihonvbere raised a matter of urgent public importance.
Ihunbere noted that the former president, who monitors elections in several African countries and beyond on behalf of regional and international organizations, got into trouble during an election monitoring mission.
Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda supported the motion, stressing that while the security of the former president was important, the protection of every Nigerian abroad should also receive equal attention.
The House of Representatives unanimously passed the motion and decided that the government should step up diplomatic efforts to ensure the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Goodkuck Jonathan is reportedly in safe hands as the military ensured he was protected during and after the coup. Jonathan will return to Nigeria soon.
