    • Former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami has firmly denied reports linking him to terrorism financing, insisting the claims are politically motivated and baseless.
    • Malami said he had never been investigated for financing terrorism and believed the report misrepresented the fact that the suspect may have had “legitimate professional or institutional interactions” with different people.
    • However, reports indicate that Malami was recently questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on unrelated matters.

Former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has vehemently denied reports linking him to terrorism financing, claiming the claims are politically motivated and completely unfounded.

In a detailed statement, Malami insisted that his professional activities had always been legal and that he had never been subject to any official scrutiny regarding terrorist financing, either at home or abroad.

“At no time during my tenure or in his subsequent public life was he summoned, questioned, targeted or investigated for terrorist financing by any security, regulatory or intelligence agency in Nigeria or abroad. ” he said.

Malami argued that the initial report was distorted by political opponents. He explained that a retired military officer simply noted that the unnamed terror suspect had “institutional” or “business” dealings with different people, which Malami said was misrepresented as a conspiracy charge.

“I state unequivocally that I have never been accused, invited, interrogated, investigated or charged by any security, law enforcement, regulatory or intelligence agency within or outside Nigeria for terrorist financing or any related offences.” he said with certainty.

He insisted: “It is both mischievous and unfair to suggest that legitimate professional or institutional involvement can be construed as evidence of terrorism financing without much more.”

The former AGF added that Nigerians must be able to distinguish between facts and political manipulation
