Just weeks after moving from Lagos to New York following a management deal with Roc Nation, Nigerian Afro music star Ayra Starr has shared an insight into life in the Big Apple.
In a recent Substack post titled “I promise, I’m not scared,” the singer said of the challenges of loneliness and cold she faced in her new city, describing her apartment as “almost empty” and likening New York to a “walk-in refrigerator.”
She admitted that there were times when she questioned her decision to move.
“It’s so cold, it feels like the city is deliberately draining my motivation. The kind of coldness that makes you feel like happiness is just a fleeting summer illusion, but there is a small voice in my head that keeps asking sarcastically, ‘Who sent you a job?'” Starr wrote.
The singer noted that she could have enjoyed the festive atmosphere of Detty December back home in Nigeria, but instead found herself facing isolation and harsh weather in New York, the result of taking bold, unconventional steps.
Ella Starr also revealed that she is entering what she calls “the age where no one understands me,” emphasizing that she no longer cares about proving herself to anyone.
