The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to investigate popular TikToker Habeeb Hamzat, also known as Peller, after he was involved in a traffic accident while participating in a social media live broadcast while driving. Field Marshal Shehu Mohammed has expressed deep concern over the growing trend of celebrities and influencers flouting traffic laws in order to gain online attention.
In a statement signed by FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed described Peller’s actions as highly dangerous and illegal, noting that they could result in serious injury or death. “Live streaming, content creation or engaging in any activity that distracts drivers from the road is a direct violation of traffic laws and endangers all road users,” the statement read.
Following the incident, Mohammed directed the Lagos State sector commander to initiate all necessary procedures to prosecute those involved, citing offenses such as reckless driving, distracted driving and use of mobile phones while driving.
The FRSC president also urged actors guilds, entertainment associations and influencer networks to educate their members on responsible behaviour. He stressed that celebrities hold huge influence, especially among Nigerian youths, and they must act as ambassadors of road safety and not symbols of recklessness.
Mohammed warned that the FRSC would not hesitate to strictly enforce the law against anyone found engaging in unsafe driving behaviour, stressing that any social media trend or online influence was not worth risking human lives.
He further encouraged all road users to remember that public roads are shared spaces governed by laws designed to protect life and urged Nigerians to support collective road safety efforts by reporting risky driving behaviour.
