Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced the deployment of public forces on the Venezuelan border after a National Security Council meeting that began at 03:00 local time (08:00 GMT). Bogotá is preparing for a potential influx of Venezuelan refugees following U.S. attacks on Caracas and other parts of the country.
The region held its breath after President Donald Trump announced that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Celia Flores had allegedly been captured.
Since the first reports of explosions in Caracas, Petro has repeatedly called for peace and dialogue.
Colombia and Venezuela share a land border of more than 2,000 kilometers, and throughout history economic and security crises in both countries have forced millions of people to seek asylum on both sides.
This is an unprecedented moment for Venezuela that will have direct consequences for many more countries—Colombia is on the front lines.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio does not expect to take further action against Venezuela following the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, a Republican senator said.
Mike Lee confirmed after a phone call with Rubio that Venezuelan President Maduro has been arrested and will face criminal charges in the United States.
“he [Rubio] No further action is expected from Venezuela now that Maduro is in U.S. custody,” said Senator Lee.
Lee added that the U.S. strikes were “to protect and defend those executing the arrest warrants.”
