Nigeria’s tax administration system has entered a new era of change. The Joint Tax Board (JRB) and the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) have officially launched the Nigeria Tax Number Portal to replace the Joint Tax Board JTB TIN Registration Portal, a landmark initiative aimed at streamlining tax compliance, eliminating duplication and enhancing revenue management, as part of the joint efforts by both parties to modernize and simplify tax administration.

This is a direct result of comprehensive tax reforms, institutional restructuring and the historic transformation of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) into the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS). Effective January 1, 2026, Nigerians will no longer use the traditional TIN system as they previously knew it.

If you are an individual, business owner, company director, cooperative, startup founder or someone accessing financial services in Nigeria, this change affects you.

Background: How Nigeria Joint Commission on Taxation TIN registration will work until 2026

Prior to the introduction of the Nigeria Tax Number Portal, Nigeria’s Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) were issued through the Joint Board of Taxation TIN Registration Portal, which could be accessed through:

    https://tin.jtb.gov.ng

The portal is the official platform for the registration and issuance of TINs to individuals and non-individual entities across Nigeria.

Personal JTB TIN Registration (Prior to 2026)

Previously, individuals could apply for a TIN online using any of the following identifiers:

    • Bank Verification Number (BVN)
    • National Identification Number (NIN)

Applicants need to fill in their personal details, after which their information will be verified. Once approved, a TIN certificate is generated and automatically sent to the registered email address.

Non-Personal JTB TIN Registration (Prior to 2026)

The portal also serves non-individual entities, including:

    • Limited Liability Company (LLC)
    • Enterprise (company name)
    • trustee corporation

For these entities, they are registered using a CAC registration number (RC) or a business name number, depending on the entity type.

While this system works, it’s not without its challenges.

Introduction to Nigeria Tax ID Portal

As part of ongoing efforts to modernize and simplify Nigeria’s tax administration, the Joint Tax Board (JTB) and the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) have officially launched the Nigeria Tax Number Portal.

The portal replaces the old TIN registration framework with a single, unified national tax identification system.

What happened to the old JTB TIN registration portal?

    From 2026:

Visiting https://tin.jtb.gov.ng will automatically redirect the user to:

This redirect confirms that the old TIN portal is fully integrated into the new tax ID infrastructure.

Nigeria tax ID portal goes online: effective January 1, 2026

The Nigeria Tax Number Portal was officially launched on January 1, 2026.

    From this date:

    • The new tax identification number will replace the previously issued TIN.
    • All tax-related identification is now handled through the tax number system.
    • Financial institutions and government agencies will require tax ID numbers instead of the old TIN.

This marks a decisive shift in the approach to tax identification in Nigeria.

How Nigeria’s new tax number system works

The new system builds on the existing national identity database to ensure accuracy, uniqueness and ease of use.

    For individual taxpayers:

    • The National Identification Number (NIN) is now the primary identifier
    • Tax ID numbers are generated using NIN data verified by NIMC

Information required to generate a tax ID number (individual)

On the Nigeria Tax ID Portal, individuals must enter:

    • National Identification Number (NIN)
    • Name (exactly as captured by NIMC)
    • Last name (exactly as captured by NIMC)
    • Date of birth (obtained from NIMC)

Any mismatch may prevent successful tax ID generation.

For non-individuals: Tax ID number based on CAC registration

    For businesses and registered entities:

CAC registration number (RC) as a unique identifier

    This applies to:

    • limited liability company
    • Company name (company)
    • trustee corporation, etc.

After entering and verifying, the system will generate a 13-digit tax ID number.

NIMC’s role in the new tax ID system

this National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Plays a vital role by:

    • Providing verified NIN data
    • Ensure accurate identity matching
    • Reduce identity fraud and duplication

This integration is one of the new system’s most powerful features.

How to access the Nigeria Tax ID Portal

The Nigeria Tax ID Portal can be accessed via:

Both links lead to the same unified platform.

    Availability and support

The Nigeria Tax File Number Portal is now live nationwide.

If assistance is needed, taxpayers are encouraged to:

    • Direct access to the portal
    • Contact the nearest tax office
    • Contact your state IRS

A final call to action for Nigerian taxpayers

Replacing the JTB TIN registration portal with the Nigerian Tax ID Portal represents not just a technological change, but a structural reform with long-term implications.

By leveraging NIN and CAC data and aligning with broader economic reforms, Nigeria is laying the foundation for a simpler, fairer and more inclusive tax system.

For individuals and businesses, understanding and adapting to this change early will ensure smooth compliance and uninterrupted access to financial and government services.

In 2026, don’t be left behind. Visit the Nigeria Tax ID Portal and generate your Tax ID now.
