    PhD program

Unlike the situation at other universities, PhDs at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology are not regulated by the overall PhD program. Each doctoral student can select and integrate elements of his or her doctoral research himself or herself. Nonetheless, there are opportunities for departments to organize and offer doctoral research courses in the form of doctoral programs.

For example, the Graduate School of Life Sciences in Zurich offers such courses. It consists of 16 highly qualified doctoral programs offered jointly by ETH and the University of Zurich. Its aim is to attract the most promising young scientists from around the world by providing a comprehensive and challenging education to doctoral students in the life sciences.

How do I find a PhD position?

Unlike many other universities, PhD degrees at ETH Zurich are not organized through a parent doctoral school. ETH mainly offers individual doctoral degrees, or each potential doctoral thesis supervisor recruits doctoral students himself. In order to be able to complete your PhD at ETH, an ETH professor must be willing to take over your thesis supervision.

With few exceptions, PhD degrees are relevant for employment at ETH or in the ETH region. The best way to apply for a PhD position is to apply directly to the professorship that interests you. To do this, visit the website of the department where you would like to study for a PhD and contact the professor directly who is suitable for you.
