Climate change is having serious impacts on Nigeria. Rising temperatures are affecting millions of people without access to air conditioning or electricity.
Extreme weather conditions are also causing changes that threaten the country’s largely rain-fed agricultural sector. Severe drought and desertification are ravaging the north, leading to conflicts over water shortages, severe flooding and Disease spread through contaminated water According to reports, the southern region of the country. The country needs to further implement climate change mitigation and adaptation measures to address these issues.
Over the years, Access Bank has mainstreamed environmental policies into its business practices to manage the environmental impact of its operations. Addressing the climate crisis through sustainable action is critical for the Bank. Through awareness raising, capacity building and innovation, the Bank helps communities and individuals reduce greenhouse gas (GhG) emissions and effectively adapt to a changing climate. In this regard, Access Bank recently supported the Climate Leadership Fellowship, launched by Climate Smart Nigeria in partnership with the Glow Initiative for Economic Empowerment. The program aims to provide Nigeria’s next generation of young leaders with expert training in climate change advocacy and leadership to enhance national climate resilience.
The program lasted 12 weeks, Empower 50 researchers/leaders Leading transformation in climate action through expert training. All fellows receive a climate education toolkit and climate leadership certificate. Fellows use a train-the-trainer approach to teach about climate change in schools and communities in Nigeria.
Middle and high school students learn how to take an active role in combating climate change and its impact on the environment and economy. About 5,000 students from 30 schools across the country benefited from this training.
Access Bank has also launched several projects to combat the severe impacts of global climate change. The bank pioneered waste recycling in Nigeria’s financial industry and has established more than 75 waste recycling points across the country.
Recognizing the opportunity to create a healthy environment through eco-friendly cooking fuels, Access Bank has partnered with the SME Fund to implement a Green Social Entrepreneurship Programme. The program has empowered 238 entrepreneurs, 70% of whom are women, with clean cookstove technology businesses, giving them easy access to start-up capital. Lift them out of poverty and tackle climate change. The entrepreneurs earned more than $39,317.28 from producing and distributing 7,500 liters of biogel. In addition, 598 households and approximately 2,100 beneficiaries received low-cost cooking fuel and stoves, reducing CO2 emissions by 287 tons.
