UCL/AHRI MSc Scholarships are now open to international students. The postgraduate research degree programs we offer at the Institute of Global Health are relevant to a variety of disciplines within the global health field.
The duration of the MPhil/PhD program is three years if studied full-time and five years if studied part-time. With the support of a mentoring team, students complete a research proposal based on current literature and practice during their first year. It may also require the collection of preliminary data or pilot questionnaires.
Students register initially for a master’s degree and then upgrade to a doctoral degree, subject to satisfactory academic progress. In order to successfully advance to the PhD level, students must prepare a written report, give an oral presentation and pass an oral examination.

- You must be permanently resident in South Africa at the time of application.
- You must have a valid passport when applying.
- Must possess the equivalent of a second class 1 honors bachelor’s degree or an honors degree with 70% in an appropriate subject.
- Successful applicants will need to start their chosen course in London in September 2021.

How to apply
If you want to apply to study for a postgraduate research degree at IGH, you first need to find a suitable supervisor. Information about our research areas and supervisors can be found here.
Contact academics whose subject areas match your projects and interests and include a 3-4 page research proposal. You may also find it helpful to check the Degree Subjects section, where you can find examples of PhD and MD (Research) subjects for current and past students.
Please read the scholarship documents carefully before making an inquiry or application. Once an academic has agreed to supervise you, please submit a formal online application to UCL for consideration.
This must include your research plan. The department graduate advisor will arrange for 2-3 independent scholars to review the proposal and make an offer of admission based on these reviews and the suitability of your academic background and writing skills.
In your application (and in any inquiries), please provide clear details about your funding status. If funding is not forthcoming, be clear about your plans for applying for funding and understand any timelines involved in those outcomes.
Please also indicate whether your proposed study plan includes time abroad to collect study data (you should check UCL’s study leave regulations before developing your study plan).
You should also check the general entry requirements for postgraduate research programmes, information by country (if applicable).
Please make sure you check the English language requirements as well. Please note that the IELTS requirement for studying a postgraduate research degree at IGH is ‘Good’, i.e. an overall band score of 7.0, with a minimum band score of 6.5 in each sub-test.
