    Clark Art Institute Scholarship 2023 Application Guide

    The Clark Fellowship is open to international students from around the world interested in pursuing postdoctoral research at the Clark School of the Arts in the United States for the 2023-2024 academic year. Clark offers eleven to sixteen scholarships each year, ranging in duration from one to ten months, with most awarded for one semester.

    Domestic and international scholars, critics, curators and museum professionals are welcome to propose projects that broaden and enhance understanding of the visual arts and their role in culture. The Institute combines a public art museum with a complex range of research and academic programs, including a major art history library. Clark is a global center for debate about the nature of art and its history.

    Scholarship Scope

    Clark Art Institute scholarships are awarded based on need and income, up to a maximum of $30,000 per semester. A Fellow’s tax liability to the U.S. government will be considered on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the tax regulations of the Internal Revenue Service. The scholar and accompanying family members will receive travel reimbursement to and from Clark.

    Fellows typically receive an apartment in a recently renovated and extended late nineteenth century house opposite Clark Campus. There are six apartments to choose from, ranging in size from one to two bedrooms, with additional communal spaces. Each apartment is fully furnished and connected to Clark’s computer network. Accommodations and services (except long distance calls) will be provided by Clark. Pets are not allowed in the scholar dormitories. Smoking is prohibited in any Clark building.

    The Manton Research Center provides private offices for fellows, with office hours from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. (early closing on weekends). Computer and IT support will be provided upon request.

    Clark Art Institute Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

    To be eligible for the Clark Art Institute Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Required language: English
    • Eligible countries: All countries in the world
    • They may come from academia or the museum world, or from other professional backgrounds.
    • Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent professional experience.
    • They may be employed, full-time or part-time, or independent academics, curators and/or critics.
    • Excellent writing skills.
    • Excellent research skills: experience in independently conducting empirical research, experience in qualitative research (conducting interviews, qualitative analysis), and preferably experience in quantitative research.

      • An English statement (pdf; 3 double-spaced pages or less) outlining the assumptions and key commitments that animate your project. It is important to place the project within the context of existing research; to show what is new or unusual in the topic and/or method; and to explain why this particular project requires discipline.
