Morocco defeats Nigeria 4-2 in Africa Cup of Nations

Yassine Bounou saved two penalties and Youssef En-Nesyri scored the decisive penalty to seal the win for hosts Morocco Won 4-2 on penalties Nigeria were held to a 0-0 draw in a tense Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in Rabat.

Morocco, seeking a first continental title in 50 years, will face 2021 champions Senegal in the decider in Rabat on Sunday, while Nigeria face Egypt in the third-place final the day before.

There were few clear-cut chances for either side in the first 120 minutes of Wednesday’s penalty shootout, but Morocco created more chances despite several fine saves from Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to deny them.

Heading into the semi-finals, Nigeria had the best scoring record of the tournament but had made little progress amid poor performances.

Samuel Chukweeze and Bruno Onyemachi were forced to reflect on their performances when they saw their tame penalties saved in the shootout, showing no ambition.

Morocco were skilful and efficient throughout the tournament, even if they were still in the process of finding their best form.

They are on the brink of a first continental title since 1976 but their biggest challenge is an impressive Senegal side, which beat Egypt 1-0 thanks to Sadio Mane’s winner in Tangier earlier on Wednesday.
