About the university Geneva Distinguished Master Scholarship
The Faculty of Science has established an Excellence Scholarship Scheme open to students from any university to support outstanding and motivated candidates who intend to pursue an MSc in any of the scientific disciplines covered by the Faculty.
The Faculty hosts three national centers of competence for research of the highly competitive Swiss National Science Foundation (Chemical Biology, SwissMAP, Planetary) as well as many European research projects. The Master’s programs in the Faculty of Science constitute an ideal training ground for academic and professional development, leading to careers in industry, teaching and management in the fields of science, communication and media… Master’s degrees in this program are either taught entirely in English or in English and French (see description of each program).
Application Requirements for the University of Geneva Excellence Master’s Scholarship
- Scan of UNIGE card Or if you are not yet a UNIGE studentthe central administration is asked to send an email titled “Your application to UNIGE” (proof that you have started the admission process).
The application form (in English or French) must include documents in the following format: single pdf file:
- A scanned copy of your national ID card or passport.
- Resume (maximum 2 pages).
- Transcript of examinations passed during bachelor’s degree education, including all grades.
- A motivational letter describing your specific scientific interests and your motivation for studying the MSc program at the University of Geneva.
- If possible: letters of recommendation from two professors (preferably sent directly by them to ) to demonstrate your ability for this program.
- Any other relevant information, such as results from the GRE (General Requirements Test), TOEFL or other language tests.
Applications are made online starting in early January each year. After registering, you will receive an email with a personal link to complete the application form.
The next application deadline is March 15, 2023 (Applies to Masters starting on 18 September 2023).
Master’s Scholarship for Excellence in Basic Research at the University of Geneva

A master’s degree from one of the world’s leading science schools is an ideal starting point for professional and academic careers. They cover a wide range of scientific disciplines: astrophysics, biochemistry, biology, chemical biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, environmental science, mathematics, mathematical and computer science, neuroscience, pharmacy, physics and prehistoric archaeology.
Scholarship Value/Duration:
The scholarship amount is CHF 10,000-15,000 per year. If the applicant is academically successful at the end of the first semester of study, the scholarship is awarded for one year and can be extended by the normal duration of the chosen master’s program (three or four semesters).

some important information
language
There is no French exam required for the Master’s program in the Faculty of Science. In most master’s programs, lectures are partly in English, and some are entirely in English.
Possessing adequate proficiency in English and/or French is the responsibility of each student. Please see each master’s program’s web page or contact its coordinator for details.
