A man has sparked widespread debate online after claiming money now determines acceptance and belonging, even within families.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Lawrence Kitema expressed dismay at what he described as the increasing cruelty faced by poor people in society. He said financial status has become a measure of worth, even among relatives who are expected to provide unconditional support.
“Now, you need money to be part of your own family. The world is so cruel to poor people.” he wrote.

His comments quickly gained traction, with many users agreeing and sharing personal experiences of how money can reshape family dynamics.

A response to PapiSpit read: “Sad but funny because it’s true 😂 Love comes with a price these days and Thanksgiving feels like a shareholder meeting. Bankruptcy can turn you into a ‘distant relative’ very quickly. That’s why I joke, but I also get it. Money doesn’t buy you love…it just buys you a seat at the table.”
According to Kitema, some users shared emotional and reflective reactions.
Esperanza writes: “In a world that judges your worth by your wallet, remember that God judges you by your soul. Poverty is a circumstance, not a character flaw…”
JP Attueyi said: “It shouldn’t be like this. Some families can’t hold meetings without the rich. What the rich say, everyone must do.”
Aditi added: “Yes, it feels heavy when even family members start treating love as a paid subscription. This cruelty is not new, it is just more shameless now.”
