Nigeria may go home with an Afcon bronze medal, but Stanley Nwabali will go home with a paltry crown – and we absolutely love him for it.
If you didn’t watch the African Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal last night, you missed out on some real drama. Morocco (host) lost 1-0 in a chaotic game. But while the Moroccans were weeping on the pitch, our very own ‘safe hand’ Stanley Nwabali was waiting at home with his phone fully charged.
Background: Towel Wars
To understand why Nwabali’s post today is trending, you have to remember the semifinals. During Nigeria’s match against Morocco, Moroccan ball boys and officials were caught on camera snatching Nwabali’s towel (which he used to dry his gloves) and throwing it away. Last night, they even tried the same “juju” tactic against Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
ultimate taunt
Minutes after Morocco lost the final, Nwabali took to social media and uttered one of the most brutal lines of the World Cup.
He wrote in pure pidgin English:
“Let Yuna wipe Yuna’s tears with all the towels I carry.”
translate: Since you are so obsessed with my towel, now you can use it to wipe your tears.
Why are Nigerians so obsessed with
It’s not just about football; It’s about the Nigerian spirit. We may not have won the gold medal, but Nwabali’s “sniper” energy on social media was the win we needed. From saving Mohamed Salah’s penalty in a third-place tie to taking the country by storm on Monday morning, Nwabali has proven he is the ultimate “no-nonsense” hero.
lesson? Don’t touch a Nigerian man’s towel unless you plan to use it to dry your eyes later.
What do you think? Is Nwabali too stingy, or does Morocco deserve to be dragged down? Leave your comments below!
