    • Aliyu Jamilu has confirmed the death of his friend Major Bashar Mohammed, whose body was recovered days after an ambush by terrorists on the Nigerian Army in Damasak, Borno State.
    • The attack reportedly claimed the lives of at least nine soldiers, with several others initially missing.

Nigerian man Aliyu Jamilu has mourned the death of his close friend, Nigerian army officer Major Bashar Mohammed, who was reportedly killed in a deadly terrorist ambush in Borno state.

The officer was among the soldiers attacked by jihadists allied to the Islamic State who ambushed a military patrol near Damasak in Borno state. At least nine Nigerian soldiers were killed in the attack, and a dozen others were initially declared missing, AFP reported. Eight soldiers have reportedly returned to base, while others, including their commander, a major, are still missing.

In a Facebook post shared on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Jamilou confirmed that the body of Major Mohammed had been found days after he went missing in action.

“Innalillahi wa inna Ilaihirraju’un! Rayuwa abun tsoro. I just woke up to the sad news of the death of my dear friend Major BA Mohammed who paid a huge price to defend his motherland,” he wrote.

“His body was found days after he went missing in Borno State, Masako.

“May Almighty God forgive his shortcomings, enlarge his grave, grant him eternal rest, and comfort the family and loved ones he left behind.”

Jamilou recalled their last conversation, adding:
“When I was talking to him a few days ago, he told me that yana cikin Bush, despite being off the internet, still managed to reach me, says a lot about the kind of person he is. Allahu Akbar. RIP Bash, I will miss you.”
