“If I can’t provide stable power, please don’t vote for me again” – Obi quotes Tinubu after two grid failures in January

    • Peter Obi has criticized repeated collapses of the national grid and urged Nigerians to hold President Bola Tinubu accountable for his electricity campaign promises, noting that the grid had failed twice in January 2026 despite earlier promises of stable power.
    • The former Anambra State governor expressed concern that the current situation seriously contradicts this commitment, noting that the national grid was reported to have collapsed about 12 times in 2025 alone.

Former Labor presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to hold President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accountable for his campaign promises on electricity supply after the national grid collapsed again.

On Wednesday, Obi posted a statement on his verified

Obi recalled Tinubu’s 2022 campaign promises, quoting the president:
“If I can’t provide reliable power for the first four years, don’t vote me for re-election.”

The former Anambra State governor expressed concern that the current situation seriously contradicts this commitment, noting that the national grid was reported to have collapsed about 12 times in 2025 alone.

“Yet, in January 2026 alone, the national grid has collapsed twice, and the month is not even over yet. This reality is diametrically opposed to the promise and should worry every patriotic Nigerian,” Obi wrote.

Obi also criticized President Tinubu’s frequent foreign trips, pointing out that the president is currently in Türkiye, a country with a population of about 87 million, accounting for about one-third of Nigeria’s population.

According to him, Turkey generates and distributes over 120,000 MW of electricity while Nigeria generates less than 5% of that capacity, a contrast that is both striking and painful.

He argued that Nigeria’s leadership should prioritize pressing domestic challenges rather than frequent foreign trips, warning that key national issues remained unresolved.

Obi concluded by urging Nigerians to turn their attention from the next general election to demanding accountability, responsible leadership and improved governance that can alleviate the difficulties faced by citizens.
