‘If I paid your bills as a woman, I would control you’ – Nigerian man sparks online debate

    • A Nigerian man has caused a stir by claiming that men who pay their partners’ bills have the right to control their lifestyles, privacy and friendships.
    • His comments sparked heated debate online, with many women objecting to what they described as controlling behavior.

A Nigerian man has sparked widespread debate on social media by claiming that men who provide financial support to their partners have the right to control their own lifestyles and personal decisions.

In a viral video shared by @ChukEricE on X (formerly Twitter), the man believes modern men have become “too weak” in relationships. He claimed that financial responsibility should come with authority and influence over women’s choices.

“If I as a woman take care of you, pay your bills, and make sure you don’t have any form of stress in your life, I will control you,” he said.

He further argued that if men were fully responsible for their finances, women should not dress in ways that their partners would not approve of, demand privacy or maintain certain friendships. He believes that what many people call boundaries are often misunderstood and wrongly labeled as unsafe.

The man also blamed social media culture, particularly conversations around “red flags,” TikTok relationship advice and online narratives, for undermining men’s authority and confidence in relationships.

“I will check your phone because there is no privacy. If you have nothing to hide, then there is nothing to hide. I will tell you the friends I don’t want you to stay with and no one will force you to stay in the relationship if you don’t want to abide by my principles.” he added.

He concludes that taking a relationship seriously requires being entirely consistent with a man’s principles, and insists that anyone who feels uncomfortable with those terms should leave.

The remarks subsequently sparked a heated response online. While some men support his views, many women strongly disagree, calling his stance controlling and unhealthy.

One commenter wrote: “So because he pays the bills, I have no privacy, no freedom?”

Another added, “No amount of money should give someone the right to decide how I live my life.”

“If I, as a woman, take care of you and pay all your bills, I have the right to control you. You can’t stop me from looking at your phone, and I won’t let you wear revealing clothing.”
