Femi Kuti, the eldest son of Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician and legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has weighed in on the recent controversy comparing singer Wizkid to his late father.
The discussion broke out after Wizkid claimed that he is “bigger” than Fela while responding to Seun Kuti’s criticism of comparisons between him and his fans.
Speaking to Arise TV via Skype from Los Angeles, Femi said he wished the controversy had never arisen, stressing that he had a good relationship with Seun Kuti and Wizkid, who were at the center of the controversy.
He described the argument as a misplaced focus, suggesting that emerging artists should prioritize advocating for better governance and solving meaningful problems rather than getting involved in such controversies.
Femi emphasized that Fela occupies a unique position in the history of music, unmatched by any other artist. He added that the late Afrobeats legend deserves admiration and respect.
He said, “Fela is our father and even younger artistes show respect to him. The discussion of Fela vs. Wizkid shouldn’t even be an issue. Fela has set the standard for music and art in Nigeria. He is in a league of his own and we should worship him and respect him. I don’t want to get involved in the Seun and Wizkid thing because Seun is my brother and Wizkid is like a son to me. I just wish it didn’t come up.”
Femi Kuti is currently in Los Angeles where he will receive Fela’s posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards this weekend.
