Nigeria Senate rejects mandatory electronic transmission of election results

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended the National Assembly’s decision to remove the requirement in the revised Electoral Code to mandate the real-time electronic transmission of election results, insisting that the move was well thought out and based on practical considerations.

Akpabio said lawmakers dropped the “real time” provision when considering the bill item by item to avoid potential legal disputes that could arise from network glitches during the election. He said mandating live transmissions could open the floodgates to court cases if there were technical glitches.

He made the remarks at a book launch event. Akpabio explained that the purpose of the Senate was not to object to electronic transmissions per se, but to avoid rigid language that could destabilize the electoral process.

He pointed out that the responsibility for deciding how to transmit the election results should rest with the Independent National Electoral Commission, stressing that the National Independent Electoral Commission was in the best position to decide on the most appropriate method of transmitting the results based on the current situation.
