Senator Kenneth Eze proposes 16-year term

Kenneth Eze (APC-Ebonyi) has called for a national debate on replacing Nigeria’s current two-term four-year presidential cycle with a 16-year term.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, Eze stated this while speaking to journalists at Oshibo-Amagu Country House in Eza South Local Government Area on Monday.

Frequent election cycles undermine policy continuity and hinder national development, he noted.

“Every four years, we go back to campaign mode. By the third year, governance slows down and attention turns to re-election; that’s why projects are abandoned and policies are premature.”

“The Nigerian constitution provides for a four-year term for the president, renewable once, but if you ask me, I would argue for a 16-year term. It sounds controversial, but it will allow policies to fully work and stabilize the system.” Mr. Eds explained.

Mr Eze therefore proposes scrapping the two-term structure in favor of a single, extended term, which would free leaders from electoral pressure and enable them to pursue long-term reforms.

The MP noted that key areas such as power, infrastructure, agriculture and fiscal reforms require sustained commitment beyond short political cycles.
