    • Veteran Nigerian folk singer Beautiful Nubia has accused two gospel musicians of stealing melody.
    • He claimed that portions of his original song “Seven Lives” were used without his permission.
    • The accusation was made in a strongly worded post on Instagram.

Veteran Nigerian folk singer, Beautiful Nubia has publicly accused two gospel musicians of plagiarizing the melody of his original song.

In a strongly worded post on Instagram, the acclaimed songwriter claimed that portions of his song “Seven Lives” were used without his approval.

He said the first alleged case occurred in 2012, referring to gospel artist Yinka Ayefele and the song “My Faith in God” (Igbagbo Ireti) he released that year. According to Beautiful Nubia, the melody of this song is taken from “Seven Lives”.

“Yinka Ayefele sang ‘Igbagbo Ireti’ in 2012,” he wrote.

The singer also mentioned a recent song “Amin” performed by BBO.

“Someone called BBO this year with Amin,” he added.

Beautiful Nubia insists that both songs drew heavily on his original compositions. One of his outspoken comments, in which he questioned the integrity of musicians, especially those in the gospel music genre, has attracted attention online.

    He asked:

“When will Nigerians (especially so-called gospel singers) learn to respect copyright? Stealing is stealing, there is no other name for it. Well, you can call it stealing.”

Read some of the comments below:

@yomzy_1st: “I love that he said (our song “Seven Lives”), he didn’t say my song, we let his fans and the band community get involved”

@natiwisky: “Hmmmm. Much respect for your work sir. I believe there are no new ideas and we are building on something and if you might do a search as well you might realize that Seven Lives might be based on an old ballad that you might have heard at some point. I believe it is human nature to copy subconsciously sometimes. Maybe reaching out will make them admit it and do what is necessary until it even raises their voice to something they might not have noticed.

@benmoore04: “You’re promoting this theft because I was forced to listen to Amin’s song and God only knows how many times I skipped it. Don’t worry, us day one fans will never stop loving you.”
