Morocco has been declared the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations champions after Senegal’s controversial withdrawal from the tournament was overturned by the African Football Confederation (CAF).
Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 in the final on January 18, a match that was overshadowed by the refusal of Senegalese players to take part in the match after the hosts were awarded a stoppage-time penalty after a goalless draw in stoppage time.
After a delay of around 17 minutes, the players eventually returned and Brahim Diaz’s penalty was saved before Senegal’s Papu Gueye scored the winning goal in extra time.
However, this result has now been overturned following a decision by the Appeals Committee, the governing body of African football.
A statement from the Coffee Association said Senegal “was declared to have given up its final match” which “resulted in a 3-0 victory over Morocco”.
The decision followed an appeal by the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), which Caf said was “declared admissible in form” and upheld.
Kraft added that Senegal had breached article 82 of the Africa Cup of Nations rules “through the conduct of its team” and therefore article 84 applied.
Article 82 stipulates that if a team refuses to play or leaves the field before the end of the specified time without the referee’s permission, it will be regarded as the loser and will be eliminated from the game.
Article 84 supplements this rule, stating that any team that violates Article 82 will be permanently eliminated and lose the game 3-0.
A statement from the FRMF said their decision to appeal the final result was “not intended to challenge the team’s sporting performance” but instead requested “the application of the rules of the game”.
“The federation reaffirms its commitment to respecting the rules, ensuring clarity on the competition framework and maintaining the stability of competitions in Africa,” the FRMF statement added.
