Nigeria News Nalin The report said the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) House Committee has asked President Bola Tinubu to promote the release of detained indigenous peoples (Nnamdi Kanu) of Biafra (IPOB) to ensure lasting Peace and development in the region.
Committee Chairman Hon. Chris Nkwonta, who called on Wednesday at the inauguration meeting of the Legislative Council of Abuja on Wednesday, said the security situation in the southeast was a major issue and any meaningful progress must be addressed.
“In view of security issues in the region, the Commission and other well-meaning Nigerians called on the President to promote the release of Nnamdi Kanu, a step towards peace and development in the southeast.
“The establishment of the Southeast Development Commission was a huge achievement after 54 years of the Civil War. But true reconciliation requires not only the development of infrastructure, but also the solution of historical dissatisfactions and ensuring justice for all,” he said.
House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen said at the committee’s establishment that the development marks a critical step in addressing the development challenges facing the Southeast.
Abbas, represented by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, described the incident as a new commitment to ensure the region receives much-needed investment and attention.
“The inauguration of the committee is not only in form,” Abbas said. “It is the beginning of a new effort to unlock the full potential of the Southeast, known for its resilience, industry and entrepreneurship.”
The spokesperson added: “The role of the Commission is to provide legislative oversight, monitor policy implementation and ensure that the Commission fulfills its mandate with efficiency, transparency and accountability.”
