Argentina revealed plans to withdraw from the World Health Organization, which followed last month’s executive order from U.S. President Donald Trump to withdraw the United States from the global health team.
Trump is considered a close ally by Argentine liberal President Javier Milei, who immigrated to the group on January 20 on his first day of office. Trump said global health agencies have made the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises improperly it requires unfair payments from the largest U.S. funders.
According to the gathering, Milei ordered the evacuation of Argentina regarding the WHO’s management of health issues.
Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni stressed that Argentina does not allow international organizations to interfere in its sovereignty, especially on health issues. He also criticized WHO’s guidelines during the pandemic, noting that they led to “the biggest closure in human history.”
Critics of the decision say exit from the WHO could limit Argentina’s access to basic funding and medical resources. They also believe that such a move requires Congress’ approval, which suggests that unilateral action may face legal challenges.
The withdrawal process is expected to begin one year from the official notice date. During this period, Argentina will continue to fulfill its financial obligations to the WHO.
