Opposition reunites against Tinubu and announces date reveals a large coalition.
Nigeria News Nalin The report said that as the 2027 election approaches quickly, the opposition and the all-progressive Congress (APC) are strengthening behind-the-scenes discussions to form a large coalition aimed at continuing the government of President Bola Tinubu.
Discussions involving key politicians in the north and south include the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labor Party (LP), New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), civil society groups and APC’s element defectors, sources told Punch.
While details of the emerging coalition are still strictly protected to prevent damage, insiders show that widespread dissatisfaction with the Tinubu government, especially in the north, has exacerbated the urgency of a strong opposition line.
Among those who confirm these developments, there are:
– Olawale Okunniyi, Director General of the National Consulting Front
– Ralph Okey-Nwosu, President of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)
– Usman Bugaje, famous northern politician and former presidential aide
Okunniyi revealed that the opposition coalition is expected to be formed in June 2025 or July 2025 after the national summit held in May.
“This summit will bring together key stakeholders to shape a powerful super opposition movement. Looking forward to something specific by July.” He said.
He also suggested that major politicians, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, were actively consulting on their roles in the league.
“We can adopt existing parties – maybe even PDP. But reshaping and reorganizing party leadership will be essential,” said Dr. He added.
‘Nigerians are suffering, APC is weak’ – Okey-nwosu
ADC Chairman Okey-Nwosu confirmed that discussions are underway, but stressed that caution is needed as the APC strives to undermine the stability of the opposition party.
“The opposition is mobilizing because this government is weak. Nigerians are hungry, suffering and disillusioned. The citizens’ movement will restore the country in 2027.” He said.
He accused the APC of using state resources to curb opposition voices, accusing some opposition leaders of being threatened or tempted by financial offers.
“We know that the APC is trying to tear down existing parties. That’s why the coalition talks are kept confidential. The ruling party is more focused on retaining power than good governance.” He added.
Northern stakeholders push for alternatives
In the north, dissatisfaction with the Tinubu policy is cheering for choice. Usman Bugaje, a prominent northern leader, said many politicians in the region are considering aligning with emerging alliances.
“The North is deeply dissatisfied with the current government. Viable alternatives will emerge before the 2027 elections, whether gradually or in important ways, He told Punch
Many northern elites reportedly believe that Tinubu’s economic policies have had a negative impact on its region and are seeking political readjustment.
