Nigerian ode performance artist, broadcaster and writer Amarachi Attamah believes that during traditional weddings, the groom who brides out drinks pours out a drink, symbolizing “rejection.”
According to Igbo custom, the groom should drink the bride’s palm wine as a symbol of acceptance and commitment.
But recently, some grooms have been seen pouring their drinks on the ground for fear of poisoning.
“Did you know that in Igbo cosmology, the bride dumping drinks symbolizes rejecting her drinks – before the marriage begins, is divorce actually divorced?” she wrote.
