10 Oyo Poly students are hospitalized after inhaling toxic gases

About 10 students from Ibadan’s Polytechnic Institute are receiving treatment in government hospitals after inhaling toxic gases.

According to the gathering, the students collapsed after inhaling on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

Witnesses said students from the science lab and technology department sat in the lecture hall after a course test after a battle between the two students broke out.

“While others tried to stop fighting, an unknown suffocation substance was released into the air, allegedly sprayed by one of the students. This caused several students to collapse, while some students lost consciousness. About 10 students were affected impact,” said one witness.

State Health Commissioner Oluwaserimi Ajeytunmob immediately responded after receiving a distress call about the incident.

The affected students were quickly evacuated and taken to Loop State Hospital and University College Hospital for treatment.

Ajetunmobi confirmed that students have been stable and received proper medical care.

She urged the governing body to conduct a thorough investigation to find responsible people and ensure they face justice.

She also stressed the importance of sensitization programs that allow students to dissuade violent and harmful behaviors that can put lives at risk.

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to ensuring the well-being of all OYO residents and will continue to respond quickly to health-related emergencies,” she assured.

Dr. Ibadan, the president of the Polytechnic Institute, thanked the state government for its quick response, pledging to identify and punish those responsible.
