Tensions between Canada and the United States spread to the ice in the match between the four Canadian countries in Montreal as three battles broke out in nine seconds Saturday night. The Canadian crowd is also known for booing in the “Stars and Stripes” before the fight broke out.
The caloric exchange between the players on both sides is captured in a viral video showing a grumpy physical dispute. Hostility is in Canada’s remarks on recent tariffs on Canadian import taxes by U.S. President Donald Trump and his remarks suggest that Canada could become the 51st state.
Coupled with the tension, Trump repeatedly mocked the outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him “Governor Trudeau.” Trudeau competed and witnessed the three battles going on on the ice.
This marks the second time Canadian hockey fans boo the U.S. national anthem in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a similar incident occurred during the Ottawa Senator’s field game against Minnesota.
Tensions between the two countries appear to be intensifying as emotions move on and above the ice.
