Since the COVID-19 lockdown, we have all started to appreciate the popular tagline in Airtel’s award-winning 2016 TV commercials, “Data is Life.” However, keeping up with data costs still feels like an endless trivia, and 50% of the price of MTN data plans recently certainly doesn’t help. The news may prompt you to consider switching to Airtel, the country’s second largest network provider.

So if you are considering using a network switch, you can compare current data plans provided by both providers to help you determine which one is the best.

How to know your best data plan

    • Cost-effective: You don’t want to pay for the same amount of data to get elsewhere for less. The best data plan ensures you make the most of each naira.
    • lasting: No one likes frequent data purchases. So if it doesn’t keep you online for longer while meeting your internet needs, it’s not the right plan.
    • Network reliability: No matter the amount, the plan you choose should provide you with speed and coverage.

Now that you know what to look for, let’s compare MTN and Airtel in terms of affordability, data volume and overall value.

notes: Given that most of us (Nigerian users) subscribe to their prepaid plans, I will ignore their postpaid data plans. Also, for the broader 5G router plan, we’ve all compared the two MTN & Airtel offers.

    MTN Data Plan

According to the state MTN is arguably the largest network provider in the telecommunications industry in Nigeria. Most MTN users choose this provider’s wide coverage and generally reliable speeds. But what data plans are MTN providing users with in light of the recent tariff rate hikes?

MTN Daily and Weekly Data Plan

MTN has daily and weekly plans for these budgets, or people who need data for a day or two:

    • If all you want is light browsing and social media, 100MB.
    • From 1GB to 350 1GB to 3GB, for 600 daily internet access.
    • 250MB of 200 and 350MB are used in the ₦350 plan, suitable for casual use within a few days.
    • 600MB, for ₦500 (7 days), 750MB+ ₦500for ₦500 (14 days), 1GB, ₦600, 1.5GB, ₦1000, 5GB, ₦1,500, if you don’t use the data in large quantities, then ₦1,500, for ₦ 3000 plans 7GB but still want to enjoy reliable internet between 7 and 14 days.

    MTN Monthly Data Plan

If you prefer long-term options, any of these plans may be useful to you:

    • 1,200 1.5GB, ₦1,500 1,8GB and 1,500 5GB are modest plans that should last for a month of social media and browsing.
    • 4.25gb ₦3000, ₦3000 8GB, ₦3,500 5.5GB, if you consume more content but still want to stick to your budget, ₦6,500 15GB and 15GB are suitable.
    • For those streaming, downloading and generally living the best online life, from 15GB of 3,500 to ₦22,000 to 3,500 to 120GB, ₦22,000 and 200GB are ₦50,000.

MTN also offers a “2-3 month plan” that ranges from 25,000 for 90GB, 25,000 for 60 days to 480GB for 900 days. There is also a “home package”, with monthly plans as low as 20GB, at 5,000 and as high as 200GB, at 30,000.

Pros and cons of MTN data planning

    advantage:

    • I believe MTN’s network provides the widest coverage even in the most remote areas of the country. There is a reason for “everywhere”.
    • Compared with other network providers, MTN’s network has fewer service outages.

    shortcoming:

    • The cost of MTN data plans is slightly higher than that of other network providers than similar data volumes. The recent hikes didn’t help either.
    • You may witness slower browsing speeds after running out of high-speed data.

    Airtel Data Plan

Airtel, the second largest network provider in Nigeria Ranking by Nairametricsis popular among users in balancing affordability, speed and coverage. This is the plan Airtel provides for users:

    Daily and weekly data planning

If you want a good volume and cost convergence, Airtel’s short-term data plan offers a great location:

    • 100MB for 100 daily plans for hyperlight users who only need to check WhatsApp or email.
    • 200MB is ₦200 (3 days), 350MB is ₦350 (7 days), and if a few days are needed to access, then more data is provided for ₦750 (7 days) for ₦750 (7 days).
    • 1GB 350 (daily) and 2GB 500 (daily) are the choices for a moderate day of internet use.
    • 1GB for 500 (7 days) and 5GB for 1,500 (7 days) is a great choice for casual weekly use.

    Airtel monthly data plan

Airtel monthly plans offer several options, especially for users looking for higher speeds:

    • 1,000, 1,200, 1,000, 1,200, and 1,500, 3GB are generous monthly usage plans.
    • If you are streaming music and videos and participating in social media, 4.5GB of 2,000 and 6GB is perfect for 2,500.
    • 10GB of 3,000, 15GB of 4,000, and 5,000 of 18GB is a great deal for a budget heavy-duty data user.
    • 23GB 6,000, 30GB ₦8,000, 40GB, ₦10,000, ₦15,000 75GB and 120GB 20,000 GB are Airtel’s big plan for living the best online life.

Airtel also offers personalized data plans under the My Offers and My Area sections based on the plans you choose most often. These plans cost significantly less than the number in regular “data plans.” There is also a “family program” for you and your people to enjoy.

Pros and cons of Airtel Data Plan

    advantage:

    • Airtel network users enjoy impressive 4G speeds even in busy areas.
    • A wide variety of options are suitable for each budget, user size and needs.
    • Airtel’s network also provides good reports throughout Nigeria

    shortcoming:

    • Airtel users occasionally complain about network congestion and slower speeds during peak periods.

Overall, the best data plan depends on your needs. If you determine coverage and reliability, select any MTN plan. The extra cost is worth your enjoyment of “everywhere” fast, consistent internet access. Meanwhile, subscribing to the Airtel data plan gives you the best balance between cost, speed and coverage, making it the first choice for users who want all of them.
