Rural electrification agencies have opened a 550kWP small solar hybrid recruitment project in Plateau State to electrify 3,500 households.
It has opened a 550kWP solar hybrid small Grid project in Bakin Ciyawa and Kwande communities (Qua’an Pan Community of Kwande Community) to electrify 3,500 households.
REA Managing Director Abba Aliyu said at a Monday ceremony that the project is part of a small, interconnected acceleration program designed to provide clean energy to underserved communities.

He said: “The completion of this 550kWP interconnected mini Grid is a game-changer for the Bakin Ciyawa and Kwande communities. Bakin Ciyawa now has a 390kWP system and Kwande has a 160kWp system.
“Together, these systems will provide clean, sustainable electricity to more than 3500 homes and countless miniature, small and medium-sized businesses.”
Aliyu revealed that at least 20,000 communities across the country currently do not have access to electricity, while 10,000 communities have been mapped to electrification.
He explained that the federal government has developed a strong plan through the REA to provide renewable energy to rural communities across the country.
“Under the current government, we are providing energy to a total of 3,700 communities, but we are in the process of the process. Each state will be 100 communities and we will inject a total of 370 megawatts of clean energy.
“Each state will be the first phase of 25 communities, will be 925 communities across the federal government, and we will inject over 92MW of clean energy into our energy space.”
He added that one of the deepest benefits of solar mini-grids is their impact on the environment.

“By replacing traditional fossil fuel-based energy sources such as diesel generators and kerosene, these microgrids can greatly reduce carbon emissions.
“The 550kWP system installed in Bakin Ciyawa and Kwande will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 600 tons per year. Reducing this carbon emissions is equivalent to about 130 cars on the road or planting about 15,000 trees per year”.
German Ambassador Dr. Karin Jansin described the project as important to her country and plateau states.
According to her, more than 20,000 people will benefit from the project. She added that the project will help create jobs, especially for agriculture, industry and many other areas.
