A driver of a crash driver professor at Federal Agricultural University in Oladipo Ademuyiwa abeokuta in Ogun State
The accident occurred on Sunday, February 16, 2025 on the newly recovered Kemta-Somorin Road in the Kemta area of Abeokuta.
Ademuyiwa, a professor of biochemical and toxicology in the early 1960s, had just gotten out of a taxi and tried to cross the road from the end of Professor Wole Soyinka when he was hit by a speeding car. The driver reportedly fled the scene.
Dr. Ayo Ajasa, president of the Community Development Association of Ajebo Road Housing Estate, called the incident a preventable tragedy in a statement Tuesday.
He accused the Ogun state government of neglecting to make repeated calls to install obstacles on the road.
“This unfortunate incident took place on Sunday, February 16, 2025, once again highlighting government intervention to prevent further tragedies,” he said.
“It is frustrating that despite our numerous appeals to the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies, efforts have not yet been made to install shortcuts and other necessary safety measures. The government did not hesitate to install the speed bump at the end of the road at Ilumu, but kept ignoring our request to maintain our lives at Ajebo Road Hosing Estate. ”
Ajasa lamented that the professor’s death was a contribution to the academic community and caused significant losses to the community and the country.
To prevent further casualties, he urged the government to install circuit breakers and truck obstacles immediately along the road and clearly traffic signs to remind motorists not to drive recklessly. He also called on stricter law enforcement to curb speeding in the estate.
“It is unacceptable that law-abiding citizens’ communities must endure repeated accidents, nearly fatal encounters, and now the death of a respected professor simply due to the inaction of the government.
“Another accident occurred within 24 hours of this tragic incident, proving that the road is still a death trap.”
