Women seek protection after husband burns clothes and destroys cell phones due to suspicion of cheating

A Harare woman seeks legal protection after enduring years of emotional distress caused by her husband’s actions. Edina Mushonga takes her husband to the Harare Civil Court in Zimbabwe, accusing him of burning clothes repeatedly and destroying her phone with suspicion of infidelity.

During the court hearing, Edina detailed her ordeal and explained how she could wear clothes and destroy her cell phone, accusing her of being unfaithful. “He tore my clothes apart and said I was sleeping. Sometimes he would burn my favorite clothes and skirts and say they were too exposed. He was used to destroying my phone and claiming that I would talk to other people,” she told court. She further noted that the behavior lasted for several years, exhausting her emotions.

In response, admitting to burning his wife’s clothes and breaking his cell phone, but his actions were justified, claiming that he was just trying to protect her from unnecessary attention. “I tried to protect her. I was worried that she would bring shame to my family,” he said.

Magistrate Meenal Naratom presided over the case, ruling that a given act was unacceptable and violated the rights of his wife. The court approved Edina’s protection order and ordered consultation.
