Driver Oke Ademola has been remanded in jail by the Oyo State Mobile Court for two officials allegedly from the Oyo State Road Traffic Administration (OYRTMA).
The incident occurred at Agodi Gate Bus Stop, where Ademola was charged with physical attacks on Oyrtma officers Kareem Yakubu and Ogunjimi Ayotunde.
Ademola drives an unlicensed Toyota Camry, facing six charges in court on Friday, including disobeying traffic lights, refusing to park in designated car parks, resisting arrest, assaulting officers, unlicensed Drive and drive unmanned vehicles. The defendant pleaded guilty to Ass@Ult charges.
The magistrate judge who presided over the case, Father Oraniyan, retained the verdict until February 26, 2025, and ordered Ademora to be taken back to Agodi Prison, awaiting the final verdict.
In a statement Saturday, February 22, Oyrtma Chairman Major Adekoya Adesagba condemned the driver’s actions and expressed concern about the trend of drivers’ disobedience to traffic laws and the trend of beating officials. He noted that such behavior undermines effective traffic management and poses a major threat to public safety.
“This illegal act is becoming increasingly rampant and is not suitable for our efforts to ensure orderly traffic flows in the state,” Adesagba said.
“We urge all drivers to comply with traffic rules and regulations to benefit everyone. Oyrtma remains committed to its mission and will not be intimidated by the act of a few people prioritizing personal interests over public safety.”
The Chairman also noted that the recent attacks on Oyrtma officials, including the deadly incident, had risen recently. He assured the public that the agency will continue to work to enforce traffic regulations and protect its officials from harm.
“This case is a harsh reminder of your consequences of violating traffic laws and attacking law enforcement officers,” he said.
